Stephen Markley launches the Fall 2018 Evenings With Authors Series with his debut novel, Ohio. Markley is a screenwriter, journalist, and graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. In Ohio, a generation has come of age knowing only war, recession, political gridlock, racial hostility, and a simmering fear of environmental calamity. Foreclosures, Walmarts, and opiates riddle the land, and death rates for rural whites have skyrocketed, fueled by suicide, addiction, and a rampant sense of marginalization and disillusionment. This is the world the characters in Markley’s novel inherit. Set in the fictional northeast Ohio community of New Canaan, Ohio takes place on a single night in 2015 when four former classmates return to their hometown, each with a mission, all haunted by the ghosts of their shared histories. Markley also is the author of the non-fiction Publish This Book: The Unbelievable True Story of How I Wrote, Sold, and Published This Very Book and Tales of Iceland.
