Thurber Center
Thurber Center is a contemporary conference and classroom facility adjacent to James Thurber’s home on historic Jefferson Avenue. It is one of twelve gracious homes housing non-profit organizations, surrounding a spacious elliptical park; dozens of mature trees make it easy to forget that you are literally seconds from access to Route I-71.
Thurber Center can accommodate meetings, seminars, training sessions, receptions, parties, and retreats. Individuals, organizations, and businesses are invited to rent part or the entire Center on a one-time or an ongoing basis. Wireless internet is available in both Thurber House and Thurber Center.
Thurber Center Facilities
Facilities include a full kitchen with refrigerator, oven, microwave, and sink; an upstairs terrace with a wraparound porch, a front covered porch, and a sculpture garden between the Center and Thurber House. Guided tours of Thurber House (the restored home of humorist, author, and New Yorker cartoonist James Thurber, now a literary center and Thurber museum) are available for $2.50 per person and last just under an hour. (Please make reservations three weeks in advance.) Hear all about Thurber’s Life and Hard Times— and the resident ghost!
Self-guided tours are free 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. daily, seven days a week.
Limited free parking is available in the lot behind the building (entered from 11th Avenue). Metered parking along Jefferson Avenue is free before 8 a.m., after 10 p.m., and on Sundays; rates at other times are 25 cents for 50 minutes.
