Thurber House is a nonprofit arts hub, James Thurber museum, and gathering place for readers, writers, and artists of all ages.
Our programs include The Thurber Prize for American Humor, one of the highest recognitions of humor writing and cartooning in the United States; author events featuring nationally known and local authors; social events for book lovers; creative workshops for children, teens, and adults; month-long writer residencies for writers of adult and children's literature; and a historic home museum of James Thurber memorabilia.

Fiction & Memoir Intensives
‣ Adult Writers’ Studio is a welcoming and creative community of serious writers 18+ who gather to share and discuss their writing, participate in generative exercises, provide/receive feedback about each other’s work, engage in topical discussions, and support each other through peer motivation and kind, constructive criticism.

Summer Writing Camp
Grades 2-9 (Spots Available for 2-3!)
‣ Summer Writing Camp for grades 2-9 isn't your typical summer camp—there are mysteries to be solved, stories to create, fantasy worlds to build, poems to be written, and fun to be had! If you have a creative student in grades 2-9 who loves reading and writing, sign them up for an epic adventure! Students will work with artists, teachers, and authors over five days filled with unique, hilarious, out-of-the-box activities designed for maximum creativity.

YOUNG WRITERS’ STUDIO
Grades 9-12
‣ Young Writers’ Studio for grades 9-12: every other week, teens gather in-person and virtually to write, create, and explore ways to get their stories on paper. Whether it's a passion or just a hobby we invite any student in grades 9-12 to join us for an opportunity to spend time with others who also like to write.

THURBER BARBECUE AT GREEN LAWN CEMETERY
Family-Friendly Summer Picnic Event
‣ Relax among the 200 year old trees and over 175 years of history at Green Lawn Cemetery as you eat a delicious picnic dinner from our friends at City Barbeque, enjoy live music, and listen to dramatic tellings of some of James Thurber’s most famous stories, including “The Night the Ghost Got In” and “The Dog That Bit People”—told by special guest readers!
Green Lawn Cemetery’s knowledgeable historians will also lead tours of the Thurber family gravesite, where the statue of James Thurber’s infamous dog Muggs, “The Dog That Bit People,” watches over his family.
