Wayne P. Lawson Children’s Writer-in-Residence Program
Thurber House has a long tradition of hosting writers-in-residence since the 1980s. In 2001, a dedicated residency was established for a children’s writer. In 2027, this residency was renamed the Wayne P. Lawson Children’s Writer-in-Residence, honoring the late Dr. Wayne P. Lawson, a beloved champion for the arts and artists around the globe and the longest-serving Executive Director of the Ohio Arts Council from 1978-2006.
The Lawson Children’s Writer-in-Residence Program is designed to provide writers with the gift of time and space to focus on current or new writing projects. Residents stay for two weeks in the fully furnished apartment on the third floor of Thurber House, the historic family home of humor writer and cartoonist James Thurber, and receive a $5,000 stipend. During their stay, residents are expected to participate in one or two Thurber House programs, such as workshops, author talks, or community outreach opportunities, with a focus on enriching children.
This residency is made possible through the generosity of the Wayne P. Lawson Memorial Fund for Creativity. Keep reading for more information and how to apply.
Residency Timeline
Applications are accepted from October through mid-January each year. Each application is read by our committee of local authors, librarians, and teachers. The three finalists will be contacted in March for a phone interview and the winner will be selected in April.
The two-week residency is held in June, July, or August. The specific time period is negotiated with the selected author. During the stay, the resident will teach writing-based activities to middle grade children for eight to ten hours per week in a variety of community settings, including the Thurber House Summer Writing Camp. The rest of the time belongs to the resident to work on their projects and sightsee around Columbus.
